Word: dragons
pLACE-NAME: near and far diagonal, fields in Brompton
Near and Far Diagonal seem to tell us about the shape of these fields. However, an earlier version of the name – Drakenal – dating back to 1698 reveals much more exciting origins, because that meant ‘dragon’s nook’. This also tells us that the name almost certainly originated in the Middle Ages.

Helpful story hints: What was the dragon’s name? What colour was the dragon? Could it fly? Did it live in the ‘nook’? Why did it live there? Where did it come from? How did the dragon behave?
